Review of "En El Tiempo De Las Mariposas"
The movie "En el time de las mariposas" is based on the novel by Julia Alvares. It is about the battle against Rafael Trujillo Molina dictatorship in the Dominican Republic.
It is set in the 30 years of Trujillo's rule. Thousands of people were tortured and killed for opposing the dictatorship. A few people who escaped survived. One of them was Patria, who became the third Mariposa. She joined a clandestine opposition group.
Several people were able to escape the dictatorship. Some of them were Minerva and Manolo. They were both political figures. They were willing to sacrifice their love for the cause. Despite their love for each other, they were also very passionate for the cause.
During the thirty-year dictatorship, the Mirabal sisters fought against Trujillo. Many people in the country supported them. But the atrocities of the regime affected the spirits of the sisters. Afterward, they developed a strong interest in freedom and social justice. They were advocates for the Dominican people.
Although the film was good, it did not include a lot of information about haitians. This could have been a better film if it had a deeper focus on the people who escaped the dictatorship.
The movie was directed by Mariano Barroso. Adapted from the novel by Julia Alvares, it was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. As a result of the success of the film, it was also translated into several languages.
